after checking in with my friends' list, it seems i have no choice but to submit myself to this quiz:| What American accent do you have? Your Result: The Midland "You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio. | | Philadelphia | | | North Central | | | The Inland North | | | The South | | | Boston | | | The Northeast | | | The West | | What American accent do you have? well, this makes perfect sense, seeing that i am from pittsburgh, but lived in philly for 10 years, and had parents who stressed the importance of not sounding like the rest of my yinzer family.

i almost relocated sodafine to a storefront 2 doors down from built by wendy in williamsburg... during the process i sorta made friends with some of the lovely ladies who work there. i ran into one of them at a tradeshow earlier this week (heh, heh...i know what built by wendy spring '07 looks like, and i'm not telling!) and she told me about the contest b.b.w. is having for people to submit projects based on the new "built by YOU" patterns. i thought some of you on my friends list might be interested in this...and one of the prizes is a sewing machine!! so get cracking! deadline is dec. 1! builtbywendy.com for more info

12:30 am - question for those of you interested in fashion:
|
how do you feel about all of these big-named designers doing lines for major discount chain stores? i just read today's daily candy about Abaeté doing a line for Payless Shoes. isn't it still crap produced in crappy conditions in some crappy sweatshop??? isn't that one of the reasons we like fancy designers?...because designer items are produced by a team of craftspeople with attention to detail, using quality materials, and presumably in conditions where the artisans are being sufficiently compensated for their labor? after taking a couple of shoemaking classes, i realize that there is no way in hell that a pair of shoes should cost $30! also, what do you think about those Isaac Mizrahi, Paul & Joe, Luella Bartley, Stella McCartney, etc. lines for Target and H&M? i admit, there is something i really admire about Target's philosophy of "design for all", but it seems like an easy way of thinking which ends up glossing over all the bad that go into producing goods for these kinds of stores. I feel like Americans could use a serious dose of re-education on the topic of consumer habits. basically, if we weren't buying so much crap all the time, everyone might be able to afford more expensive/better designed/ethically produced goods. no? i mean, that's totally over-simplifying the issue...but geez! something's got to give! i'm curious to find out what the rest of you think. those of you that make things, as well as (maybe especially)people who don't make things...please discuss.

9:18 pm - the new shop

it's been a nice week so far. slow-ish, but people are wondering in to browse. robert and i made a flag to hang above the entrance today, and tonight i'm gonna sew on "sodafine" patchwork style. did i mention how amazing it feels to be on street-level?

the new shop is open!
 pictures coming soon...
well, here i am. 119 grand street between berry & wythe. in williamsburg. i opened up the shop on tuesday, i don't plan on having my opening party thing until september 9 or 16. i'll have some time to relax and get back into the swing of being the shopgirl. my legs have gotten so bruised and scratched from all the moving/renovating work. they're so much happier now, but look kinda bad with dresses. not that that stops me. i'm so happy to not be wearing the same shorts and retarded t-shirts with paint and goo all over them that i've been wearing for the past month and a half. the shop looks good. robert built me an amazing shelf from scratch. not unlike a $500 pottery barn thing that wasn't even exactly what i needed but seemed like an ok solution. robert could not accept the idea of dropping so much money on something so dumb, so he made a much better version for $120. this is one of the reasons why i love my roberto. verizon says that there's not enough copper wire in my neighborhood for me to have dsl, so currently, no internet at the shop. i will bug them, and look into other solutions. i kinda hate verizon, so somehow this doesn't surprise me. it seems like a fake reason though... not enough copper wire? what? my parents are cutting my vinyl lettering for me, so i won't have that until next week. robert is gonna hang the speaker wire in a semi-aesthetically pleasing manner across the ceiling so i can use my stereo and not the dinky little boombox i've got going on now. the windows still need to be cleaned a good bit. my arms got tired from scraping and goo gone-ing, so i gave up for the time being. there's little bits of spray paint on the exterior. the storefront was boarded up with that peg-boardy stuff with little holes all over it, and it got all graffitied over, so it went through the holes in a lot of places. (did i ever mention how i think that most graffiti, if not all, is stupid?) the interior of the windows was all gummed up by tape that got even stickier from being in direct sunlight. there was paper and fabric taped to the window i guess because a family was living in the boarded up store for a couple years or something. that's kind of depressing to think about. ...but the glue from the tape has been a real bitch to remove. i think i got most of it though. it's the exterior that could really use some more work. blah. so yeah, i'm open. it feels good. come visit me.

emmaluv1 and her boyfriend Anthony attended and participated in the Allied Media Conference in Bowling Green, Ohio this past week. Anthony works for: prometheus radio project in philadelphia. I was talking to Em about the trip and some of the issues they've been working on. She was happy to report that the Senate Commerce Committee vote included an amendment to a communications bill allowing for more low-powered FM radio stations. This ammendment is part of a large telecommunications bill that covers everything from internet access to public access TV stations. However, one of the concerns with this bill, and others like it, is that Congress will use it to end "net neutrality" and allow ISP's to place limits on what information you can access on the internet and/or pay hefty fees for hits to your website.
I think it's IMPERATIVE that all of us crafty internet business folk keep on top of these issues and write to our Senators and urge them to preserve net neutrality!!! Otherwise, small businesses like ours will very likely be pushed off the web! Don't let big coorperations take over the internet!
Here are some great links i found at prometheusradio.org. Visit these sites, read the information, and send in the petitions!

Another thing i can cross off my to-do list: I just finished updating the vintage section over at cut+paste! Hooray!!! mission accomplished! (Please do not make fun of my weird facial expressions and flat hair. I am horribly un-photogenic.)
This is one of my favorites from this batch of new stuff.
